ILMS 6th graders are rolling along in science class, learning all about energy.
They recently participated in Marble Races. Using a large marble and a small marble, the students set up ramps with books, a ruler and an empty milk carton. After rolling the marble down the ramp, they measured how far the marble pushed the milk carton at the bottom. Instructor Christina Fullerton says, "We have it set up to where they can easily measure and see that more mass equals more energy." Then they compared the difference between how far the large marble transferred its energy to push the carton versus the small marble.
The students also used a balance to find the mass of the marble and later a scale to discover its weight.
The exercise teaches several science standards for the grade level.
