As the saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day."
But 7th grade pre-algebra students did build their scale model of Rome in just a few weeks.
Students chose a famous Roman structure. Then they used a scale and map to find the dimensions of their scale model.  Once they were built, they found the distances between the buildings on a map and figured out how far apart to set them up in the cafeteria. Working with ancient Roman buildings to tied it into their Social Studies class, as well.  Each group had to tell what the building was for, when it was built and any historical significance. Scale models included famous buildings such as the Colosseum, Theatre of Pompey, the Baths of Caracalla and Circus Maximus.
