Balloon races recently blew through the ILMS 6th grade. This grade level does the balloon race activity in science to teach the students about action forces and reaction forces. The students must attach a straw to an inflated balloon with tape.  While they do this they think about how to reduce the amount of friction between the straw and fishing line.  Newton's 3rd Law of Motion states that for every action force there is and equal and opposite reaction force.  With this activity the students learn that the action force is blowing up the balloon and the reaction force is the air rushing out of the balloon, which in turn pushes the balloon down the fishing line.
