Indian Lake 8th graders are learning about life in the Armed Forces.

1998 ILHS graduate and Army National Guard Sergeant Scott Reed recently spoke with students about his 22-year career defending our country and rescuing those in peril.

Sgt. Reed explained that he joined the National Guard as a junior in high school in hopes it would help pay for his education. He completed basic training just after his high school graduation and soon became a mechanic for Blackhawk helicopters. He is now a member of the National Guard’s full-time staff in Columbus, serving as a Crew Chief for MedEvac (medical evacuation) helicopter missions. He even demonstrated to students how to repell from helicopters to rescue people who are trapped by flood waters or other disasters.

Sgt. Reed has served all over the world, including rescue operations during Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico two years ago. He leaves next week for a 20-month operation in the Middle East.

Sgt. Reed still has ties to Indian Lake Schools, including two nieces at ILMS.
