The Indian Lake School District is taking the next steps in Behavioral Leadership, now involving students in the leadership team!
Tony DeRose, who teaches Scott Irvin's (“the Kid Whisperer”) classroom management techniques, met with a select group of middle school students chosen to be a part of the newly-formed Laker Leadership Corps. DeRose has been working for months with IL staff members. In his very first lesson with the students, DeRose taught them how to dismiss tables in the cafeteria during lunch using a double tap for tables that are clean and quiet.
ILMS Co-Principal Missy Mefford says, “We’re excited to expand these Behavioral Leadership strategies to the students. It gives them the option of having more control over decisions and situations that directly affect them, as long as they respect each other and behave.”
ILMS is making some changes to the lunch period as part of the Behavioral Leadership rollout. Students are able to sit with friends, instead of only students from their homeroom. They are also able to choose whether they’d like to go to recess or stay in the lunchroom instead. ILMS is also employing these same kinds of strategies during class changes.
Administrators and paraprofessionals from the elementary school came to observe the lunch periods with the goal of implementing similar practices at ILES.
